More and more couples nowadays have to face problems with conceiving. Assisted reproduction offers many successful methods of treatment, but even so, not every couple can achieve pregnancy using their own germ cells. These couples – if they don’t want to remain childless – can then decide for treatment with the use of donated egg or sperm cells, if they consider the option of adoption their very last resort.

Donating cells is nowadays a very successful way of treating infertility. However, it is also a very difficult matter for the couple, because it brings very intense emotional pressure. For the couple who is considering treatment using the donated cells is the decision very crucial and hard, full of questions and dilemmas, which require time to be thought through.

Some couples don’t like the thought of accepting somebody else’s reproduction cells and they choose to remain childless. If the wish for a child is strong, though, they are willing to undergo even the treatment within the cell donor program on their way to the desired child.

The first question the couple has to deal with when considering the donor program is, is the child even going to be really ours? After all, accepting help using the donated cells means giving up the traditional image of parenthood by using foreign genes. Despite the experience of their own pregnancy from the very beginning, giving birth and the immediate option of breast-feeding is undoubtedly beneficial for the child, the mother and the family, women who cannot conceive using their own egg cells have to face the fact the child won’t carry their genetic information.

This, however, is not true anymore, because a fundamental discovery has been made!

Professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Southampton Nick Macklon reffers to a research based at a leading Spanish fertility clinic, IVI Valencia. The study led to the discovery that fluid in the uterus of the mother contains genetic material.

A child conceived with the use of a donated egg cell has a part of the genes from its donor and half from its father. The father and the donor give the child genetic information and the mother, who bears the child and gives a birth to it, chooses the genes that are going to be used. Up until now it was believed that the fertilized egg has only the DNA of the donor and the biological father. The newest research, however, shows that the bearer of the foetus, even if it’s from the egg of another woman, gives the child a part of their DNA as well! The child, therefore, bears the genetic information from three parents. It is a small part of the genetic material, which influences how the child grows and develops. Said research was carried out at a prime Spanish clinic and it was discovered that the liquid in the mother’s uterus, which carries her DNA, directly influences the development of the embryo. It was thought before, that the fact that the very stay in the mother’s uterus can have an impact on the future child, both mental and physical, but only now the scientists have discovered a proof. It was confirmed that the embryo absorbs the mother’s DNA and the genetic information can be changed. This is the reason the children look alike with the woman who bore them, even though she got pregnant using a donated egg cell.

 

This amazing discovery can have important influence on the approach of the infertile women to egg donating, because it cancels out the argument that they cannot give any genetic information to their child that way.
